Manet painted Claude Monet, his wife Camille, and their son Jean in the garden at Argenteuil during a summer the two artists spent painting side by side. The intimate outdoor scene captures the plein-air spirit of the Impressionist circle at its most convivial.
The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession 1976.201.14), bequest of Joan Whitney Payson, 1975.
