Manet painted this towering portrait of the actress Jeanne Demarsy as an allegory of Spring, exhibited at the 1865 Paris Salon. The full-length format and direct gaze provoked critics, while the bold juxtaposition of blue and black anticipated the revolution in modern painting.
The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession 89.21.3), gift of Erwin Davis, 1889.
