Ruisdael’s iconic“Haarlempje” depicts the city of Haarlem from a high vantage point, with the great St. Bavo’s Cathedral rising above the rooftops and bleaching fields stretching across the sunlit foreground. The format—a low horizon under a towering sky—became one of the defining conventions of Dutch landscape painting.
The work is now in the Rijksmuseum (accession SK-A-351).
