Portrait of Oopjen Coppit

A young woman stands full-length against a bare wall in the dark costume of wealth, her white ruff framing a face lit softly from the front. Rembrandt painted this life-size pendant portrait in 1634, the year of his marriage, pairing it with the companion likeness of Oopjen’s husband Marten Soolmans; the two canvases are famed as the only life-size full-length portraits he ever painted for a private couple. Painted with the bravura brushwork and directness of his early Amsterdam years, the work shows the young Rembrandt at the very height of his first fame as a portraitist.
