The Stone Bridge

A stone bridge carries a rutted road across a stream in the foreground, cattle and riders passing, while a sunlit village and spire rise behind dark trees. Adriaen van de Velde painted this small, luminous landscape late in his career, and it stands among his most admired works — the panel that made his reputation for introducing figures and a play of warm light into the Dutch landscape tradition.
