Man and Woman at a Meal

A man and woman sit facing each other over a laid table, sharing a modest meal in an intimate, half-lit interior. Gabriël Metsu painted this quiet genre scene in the 1650s, during the Amsterdam years in which he refined the domestic subjects that rivaled the city’s most celebrated painters of daily life. The tenderness of the seated couple, the careful still life of food and the warm play of window light over the room are characteristic of the mature Metsu, whose small cabinet pictures were among the most prized of the Dutch school in his own lifetime and for centuries after.
