John Constable made the heath at Hampstead, where he and his family lived from 1819, the subject of some of his most personal landscapes. Branch Hill Pond, painted in 1828 near the end of that period, belongs to the late Hampstead views in which the artist distilled his lifelong study of clouds and light. Cleveland acquired the painting through the Leonard C. Hanna Jr. Fund in 1972.
