Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted this large family portrait of the publisher Georges Charpentier’s wife and children in 1878, at the moment his reputation was rising among the Parisian cultural elite. Shown at the Salon of 1879, where it was widely admired, the picture is regarded as the work that confirmed Renoir’s standing and helped secure the Impressionists’ acceptance in official circles.
