The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint-Rémy)

Vincent van Gogh painted The Large Plane Trees in the autumn of 1889, during his year as a patient at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy. Alongside the cypresses and wheat fields of that period, it belongs to the remarkable sequence of works in which van Gogh transformed the landscape of his final years into some of the most intense paintings of the nineteenth century. It entered the Cleveland collection as a gift of the Hanna Fund in 1947.
