The Glen at Ornans (Bords du Doubs; Effet d’Automne)

Dated 1866, when Courbet was at the height of the reputation his Ornans subjects had made for him and was dividing his time between Paris and the Franche-Comte; the museum gives the canvas the alternative titles Bords du Doubs and Effet d’Automne. It passed from the Goupy collection in Paris through the 1898 Chevallier sale and Galerie Durand-Ruel, the Boston collection of Henry Sayles and the 1920 Plaza sale, and was with Duncan Phillips of Washington by 1921; the gallery received it with the Phillips gift of 1939.
