John Biglin in a Single Scull

Signed on the verso “Eakins 1874”. The museum groups it with the rowing pictures Eakins made after his years at the Pennsylvania Academy and his training in Paris, where he had studied under Jean-Leon Gerome. It came from the artist’s widow, Susan Macdowell Eakins, through Penn Burke to Francis P. Garvan of New York, and was given to the gallery in 1932 as part of the Whitney Collections of Sporting Art, in memory of Harry Payne Whitney and Payne Whitney.
