Landschaft mit der Ansicht von Haarlem

The museum’s German title means “landscape with the view of Haarlem”. Ruisdael was born in Haarlem in 1628 or 1629 and trained and first worked there, but the museum notes that he only made his native town a subject much later, long after he had settled in Amsterdam about 1656, and that his wide prospects of Haarlem belong to those Amsterdam years. Catalogued in Berlin as inventory 885C, the painting was bought in 1874 with the collection of the Aachen banker Barthold Suermondt, one of the founding purchases of the Berlin gallery. It is held in the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
