At Calcot

Dated 1885, when Sargent was working out of doors in England between the successes of his Paris years, and belongs to the open-air campaign that carried him away from the studio. The canvas reached New Haven in 1937 with the Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Collection, formed from the estate of the American painter and illustrator Edwin Austin Abbey, who had settled in England and whose bequest became one of the gallery’s founding collections. The museum records the work as American in culture and dates it to the nineteenth century.
