Painted in 1893, when Sargent was established in London as the most sought-after portraitist of his generation; the animals and landscapes he made between commissions were, as here, studies he chose for himself. It entered the gallery in 1937 through the Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Collection, the bequest of the American painter Edwin Austin Abbey, alongside the other Sargents that came to Yale from the same estate.
