Homer Dodge Martin, one of the most individual American landscapists of the nineteenth century, moved from the detailed Hudson River School manner of his early years toward the subdued tonal harmonies of his late career. Wild Coast, Newport, painted in 1889, belongs to this final phase, when Martin’s quiet views of the New England shore won the admiration of critics who had once dismissed his work as uneven.
