Daniel Crommelin Verplanck

John Singleton Copley, the preeminent painter of colonial America, was largely self-taught in Boston before his departure for London in 1774. This 1771 portrait of Daniel Crommelin Verplanck, a New York merchant, belongs to the final years of Copley’s American career, when his penetrating likenesses of the colonial elite earned him the standing that carried him to the Royal Academy.
