Villerville Seen from Le Ratier

Charles-François Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, carried his practice directly onto the water, painting from a converted studio boat on the Seine and the Oise. This view of the Normandy coast at Villerville dates to 1855, a period when his open-air landscapes were winning attention at the Salon and earning him a reputation as a bridge between Barbizon and the Impressionists.
