The Seine at Bas-Meudon

Johan Barthold Jongkind, the Dutch-born painter who settled in France, is regarded as a direct forerunner of Impressionism; Claude Monet later credited him with ‘the final education of my eye.’ Working along the Seine and the Norman coast in the 1860s, Jongkind developed a manner of rendering river scenes and seascapes with an immediacy that the Impressionists would take up as their own.
