Rembrandt’s largest and most celebrated painting depicts the company of civic guard captain Frans Banninck Cocq caught mid-motion as it prepares to march. Formally titled Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, the picture is renowned for its dramatic chiaroscuro and its transformation of the static group portrait into theatre. It has hung in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam since 1808.
