The Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early sixteenth century, portrays Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo — hence its Italian name, La Gioconda. Celebrated for the sitter’s enigmatic smile and Leonardo’s subtle sfumato technique, the panel entered the collection of King Francis I of France and has hung in the Louvre in Paris since 1797.
