Painted during Van Gogh’s year as a patient at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, this view of the road menders belongs to the remarkable sequence in which he transformed the landscape of his final years into some of the most intense paintings of the nineteenth century. It entered the Cleveland collection as a gift of the Hanna Fund in 1947.
