Jacob Jordaens, with Rubens and van Dyck one of the three great masters of Flemish Baroque painting, remained in Antwerp his whole life. This early work of 1616, painted before the genre scenes that made his name, shows the young artist absorbing the energy of Rubens’s circle, whose collaborative commissions he would soon join.
