A Man and a Woman on Horseback

Philips Wouwerman, the most celebrated painter of horses in the Dutch Golden Age, worked in Haarlem, where his equestrian and cavalry scenes commanded some of the highest prices of the seventeenth-century Dutch market. This small panel from around 1653–54 is characteristic of the refined, silvery touch that made Wouwerman’s work prized by collectors from the court of Louis XIV to the galleries of the eighteenth century.
