Still Life with Meat, Fish, Vegetables, and Fruit

A lavish display of provisions covers the table: a haunch of venison, a platter of fish, glistening fruit, and vegetables piled with studied abundance. Hulsdonck, working in Antwerp during the early seventeenth century, was among the first painters to develop the monumental “pantry” still life — large-scale compositions that showcased the wealth and culinary sophistication of Flemish merchant households. Every surface is rendered with tactile precision: the sheen of fish scales, the rough texture of bread, the translucency of grapes.
