Still Life with Fruit and Cheese

A tabletop laden with cheeses, bread, fruit, and wine gleams under cool, even light. Van Dijck, a Haarlem painter working in the early seventeenth century, was among the pioneers of the Dutch “banketje” (banquet piece) — restrained, meticulously observed compositions that celebrated the abundance of the Dutch table without the theatrical excess of later Flemish still lifes. The matte surfaces of cheese rinds, the crusty texture of bread, and the translucent skin of grapes are rendered with quiet, confident precision.
