Hals painted Jan van de Poll, a Haarlem burgomaster, with the brisk, visible brushwork that made him the most sought-after portraitist of the Dutch Golden Age. The sitter’s direct gaze and relaxed pose convey the confidence of a man at ease in his prosperity.
The work is now in the Rijksmuseum (accession SK-A-1246).
