De Hooch placed a mother and child in the cool shadow of a well-stocked pantry, letting afternoon light fall across the brass vessels and linens. The painting belongs to his Delft period, when he perfected the interplay of interior spaces and filtered daylight that defines his best work.
The work is now in the Rijksmuseum (accession SK-A-182).
