A seated mother holds a sleeping child on her lap while another passenger looks on, one side of the car framed by the window beyond. Mary Cassatt made this plate in 1890–91, inspired by the Japanese colour woodcut exhibition she and her circle saw in Paris that year, and it belongs to her famous series of colour prints in drypoint and aquatint. These prints, with their flat colour and unconventional composition, are counted among the most important works of colour printmaking in the history of European art.
