Bretonne au bouquet (Huelgoat)

A young Breton woman stands holding a bouquet of wild flowers, her figure flattened into broad masses of local colour against the Breton countryside at Huelgoat. Paul Sérusier, who had launched the Nabis group with his famous Talisman painted under Gauguin’s direction, made this picture between 1892 and 1893, applying the group’s doctrine of expressive colour and decorative pattern to the peasant life of Brittany that he loved. The painting is held in the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris.
