Painted in 1923 during Kandinsky’s years at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Composition VIII is the pinnacle of his geometric period — a cosmic dance of circles, arcs, half-circles, squares and pointing lines on a pale ground. Kandinsky considered it the culminating work of his pre-war Compositions, now freed from representational echoes. Solomon R. Guggenheim acquired it for his collection, and it hangs today in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
