View of Duurstede Castle at Wijk bij Duurstede

Duurstede Castle rises above the Rhine fork near the town of Wijk, its towers reflected in water nearly smooth as glass while a ferry carries a coach-and-four across, lobster fishermen draw in their nets, and cattle drink along the bank. Jan van Goyen wraps the scene in his characteristic tonal palette of blue, silvery grey and pale green, so that the castle seems a fairy-tale place rather than the actual medieval stronghold south-east of Utrecht. The painting is held in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
