Emanuel de Witte was a Delft painter celebrated for his church interiors, which combine meticulous architectural observation with a profound sensitivity to the quality of light within sacred spaces. This 1683 painting commemorates Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the most celebrated Dutch naval hero of the seventeenth century, whose tomb in the Nieuwe Kerk became a site of national pilgrimage.
