A household in cheerful disarray: the master of the house slumps in his chair, a pipe in hand, while children mimic their elders over cards and drink. Jan Steen’s moralizing comedy — “as the old sing, so the young pipe” — was a favorite theme of the Dutch Golden Age’s most entertaining storyteller.
