Francesco Guardi was the last great vedutista of Venice, working in the tradition established by Canaletto but bringing a more atmospheric, painterly approach to the depiction of the city. His views of Venice, painted for Grand Tourists, capture the unique quality of Venetian light with a freedom of brushwork that anticipates Impressionism.
