Hassam was a leading figure of American Impressionism and a member of “The Ten,” a group of painters who broke from the Society of American Artists to exhibit in a more progressive vein. His winter scenes of New York and New England are among the most celebrated examples of American Impressionism, combining the light-drenched palette of French Impressionism with a distinctly American sense of place.
