Paysage avec voyageurs

Travellers and their mounts move along a road edged on the right by a waterfall. At the centre of the picture a draughtsman sits with a standing companion, sketching the Roman Campagna. The Ponte Lucano and the tomb of the Plautii, which in reality stand near Rome, are here represented outside their true setting; in the distance, beyond the plain, mountains rise. Jan Both, who met Claude Lorrain in Rome and was shaped by his golden Italianate light, painted this idealised Italian landscape about 1650 — a companion to the Pastorale of the same Dutuit Dutch room, and the catalogue’s second Both. The painting is held in the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris.
