Gerard de Lairesse was a prominent Amsterdam painter and art theorist whose influential treatise Groot Schilderboek (1707) shaped artistic education for generations. Despite being disfigured by congenital syphilis, de Lairesse became one of the most respected figures in Dutch art, his work combining classical idealism with the dramatic lighting and rich color of the late Baroque period.
