A sunlit Dutch landscape unfolds along a wide waterway, its banks lined with tall reeds. Figures — a gatherer bent among the reeds, a shepherd with his cattle, and other rustic figures moving through the middle distance — occupy the foreground and middle ground, while a sky with soft clouds completes the pastoral scene. Nicolaes Berchem (1620–1683), one of the most popular and widely collected painters of the Dutch Golden Age, was celebrated for precisely this kind of warm, glowing pastoral landscape, full of grazing animals, rustic figures, and golden afternoon light. He signed and dated few of his works, but this oil on canvas, 61 × 72 cm, is assigned to the 1670s on stylistic grounds and is held by the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
