In an imaginary Gothic church interior, Queen Blanche of Castile — accompanied by soldiers and nurses — frees prisoners who emerge from the oubliettes, prostrating themselves at her feet; through an opening above, three figures look down on the scene, and in the background a door opens onto a gallery of arches where a couple strolls. François-Marius Granet, the painter of monastic and church interiors, set this act of medieval mercy in the soaring gloom of a cathedral nave, light falling through the high windows onto the pitiful procession. The painting is held in the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris.
