The young Julius Eckersberg, son of the great C. W. Eckersberg, stands in his father’s Charlottenborg studio in a waistcoat and buttoned jacket, his left hand resting on a chair and his right holding a small portfolio. Christen Købke, Eckersberg’s most gifted pupil, paints the boy with the same quiet, luminous observation he brought to his own family portraits — a characteristic of the Danish Golden Age at its most intimate. The canvas, 41 × 29.5 cm, is held by the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark).
