The Elector of Saxony, patron of Luther and of Cranach’s workshop, is shown in a small, jewel-like panel with the letterpress-printed verses that were his family’s motto. Cranach’s court portraits set the sitter against a plain ground, letting the sitter’s features and the fine detail of costume carry the image.
