Fine Wind, Clear Morning

Fine Wind, Clear Morning — known simply as Red Fuji — is among the most celebrated of Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832. The mountain fills the frame in a deep cinnabar red, caught at dawn against a sky of pale blue bands, its bare lower slopes contrasting with the snow near the summit. Hokusai distilled the view into a pattern of startling simplicity, a study of form and color that helped shape the European image of Japan and influenced the Impressionists. The impression catalogued here is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
