A deer pauses on a rocky promontory that overlooks a vast valley at the edge of the forest, the ground strewn with boulders and the golden foliage of the foreground trees announcing the end of summer. Félix Ziem, the painter of Venetian lagoons and Mediterranean ports, here turned his luminous plein-air observation on the forest of Fontainebleau, where he worked alongside the Barbizon circle; the picture dates between 1875 and 1880. The painting is held in the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris.
