Painted during Manet’s stay at Argenteuil with Monet in the summer of 1874, this work shows the Impressionist influence on an artist usually associated with darker, more confrontational compositions. The bold, flat areas of color and the high horizon line reflect Manet’s admiration for Japanese prints, while the brilliant light and broken brushwork place the painting squarely within the Impressionist orbit.
