Anne Vallayer-Coster was one of the few women admitted to the French Académie Royale, elected in 1770 at the age of twenty-six. Her still life paintings earned the admiration of Marie Antoinette and Denis Diderot, who praised her ability to elevate humble subjects through sheer technical mastery. This 1769 work was painted the year before her election and demonstrates the skill that secured her place in the most exclusive artistic institution in Europe.
