Painted in 1888, during the most intensely productive stretch of Van Gogh’s career, this field scene belongs to the body of work he produced in Provence before the breakdown that would bring him to Saint-Rémy. The wheat-field motif, to which Van Gogh returned repeatedly across his final years, carried for him both the vitality of the Provençal landscape and an underlying meditation on the cycles of labour and renewal.
