Painted in September 1889 during Van Gogh’s stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Wheat Field with Cypresses captures the swirling energy of the Provençal landscape. The golden wheat, rendered in thick impasto strokes, ripples under a turbulent sky while towering cypress trees—dark, flame-like forms—anchor the composition. Van Gogh considered this among his best summer paintings, writing to his brother Theo that the study of the countryside provided him with renewed strength. The painting resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
