Washington Crossing the Delaware

Leutze’s monumental canvas depicts George Washington leading the Continental Army across the icy Delaware River on the night of December 25–26, 1776, in the surprise attack on Hessian forces at Trenton. The painting, commissioned in 1850, became one of the most iconic images of the American Revolution.
The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession 97.34), gift of John Stewart Kennedy, 1897.
