Ville-d’Avray

Camille Corot painted the pond at Ville-d’Avray, where his parents owned a property, again and again throughout his life. This late version distills his vision to its essence: a soft-edged expanse of water, a fringe of feathery trees, and buildings dissolved in silvery atmosphere. Corot’s tonal subtlety and tender handling made him a bridge between the classical landscape tradition and the Barbizon School, and a revered model for the Impressionists who followed.
