View of Houses in Delft, Known as ‘The Little Street’

A quiet street of stepped brick facades runs beside a narrow canal in Delft, its proportioned houses shown front-on beneath a pale sky, with two children playing by the doorway and a woman bent over her work in the passage. Painted around 1658, this is one of only three surviving outdoor city views by Johannes Vermeer, and its stillness and clarity are among the most beloved passages in Dutch painting. The patient, almost architectural balance of forms and the soft daylight across the weathered brick give an ordinary street an enduring feel of intimacy and calm.
